I was texting David yesterday on the seasons of parenting and how they change as child moves into adulthood; what is expected of both the parent and the child in each phase. (And none of us ever does a perfect job of parenting). But to see your child in a happy life, doing daily tasks that make them happy whether for pay or pleasure and successful on their own terms, yes, that makes a parent happy. But it’s a long road to get there fraught with issues for every family. My years being in a family both as a child and as a parent, and volunteering as a Guardian ad Litem, working with children who have been taken from their homes because of abuse, abandonment or neglect taught me that lesson over and over. Your writing makes me happy, and definitely makes me think. Thank you for this beautiful piece today.
