Glad to discover this via Dave Bonta. Just over a year ago I started what my dad and I are calling an oral history project. It was my idea. We're using Zoom as our tool. It got derailed by a crisis with one of my kids, but we're getting back to it. Or planning to. I've discovered it's hard for me in ways I didn't anticipate. Really looking forward to learning from you.
Hi Rita, thank you for reading and commenting! I hope your experience with your dad yields rich material. It’s a very special kind of “ouch,” isn’t it?
It really is. Your post hit close to home--alcoholism, writing from our lives, reactions to early writing. When my first (only) book was published, a family member commented to my dad that I really made him look like an asshole. That shocked me and silenced me. He and I have come a long way in 20 years, but our talks have stirred some things. I don't know what will come of any of this, only that he wants me to use it to write his obituary. God, yes: Ouch.
